Reflexology aims to relieve some of the uncomfortable symptoms of pregnancy such as back pain, swelling, constipation, digestive issues and anxiety etc.
Reflexology helps women to prepare their body to go into labour. Taking time out to have a wonderful relaxing reflexology treatment is often enough to help kick start labour. After a reflexology treatment, you will feel a sense of calmness and pure relaxation.
Many women at this later stage of their pregnancy are encouraged to relax when often they are anxious about the birth. If your body has high levels of stress hormones, your body is essentially in fight or flight mode trying to tell you "don't go into labour, run somewhere safe and quiet instead".
Stress and anxiety can inhibit the release of oxytocin which is the hormone that drives the first stage of labour. Reflexology techniques apply gentle pressure on specific reflex points which over a period of time could potentially aid the onset of labour, by encouraging the release of oxytocin.
It is recommended that weekly reflexology treatments should ideally begin in the later stages of pregnancy. Maternity Reflexology aims to provide women with support, comfort, control and a positive birth experience.
